Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai |
SENATOR Danjuma Laah has accused the Federal Government of treating the attacks on the people of Godogodo town in Jema’ah Local Government Area with levity and not doing enough to stop the carnage in the area.
This, he said, was because since the invasion of the town by suspected Fulani herdsmen, the Federal Government had yet to deploy enough armed soldiers, police and manpower to the area.
Laah, the only Peoples Democratic Party senator from the North-West, was reacting to the killing by suspected herdsmen of over 20 natives of Godogodo between Saturday and Sunday.
The incident forced the interim Chairman of Jema’ah Local Government Council, Humble Katuka, to impose a 24-hour curfew on the LGA.
The senator, who undertook an on-the-spot assessment of the town, told newsmen that the incident was an unforgivable crime against not only the people of Godogodo but the entire southern Kaduna.
The senator maintained that relevant authorities had refused to give the soldiers and police stationed in the Godogodo equipment and moral support.
Laah, who addressed some residents of the town, said, “I heard what was happening since last Saturday evening but I was stopped from rushing down here. I want to say that what I have seen here is a huge crime. It is an unforgivable crime against the people of Godogodo, Southern Kaduna and humanity.
“My investigation shows that there were very few soldiers and policemen here compared to the size of the town and the danger looming over it. I’m told that the invaders had superior weapons.
The senator appealed to Godogodo residents to remain calm and peaceful, adding that they must not take into their hands.
Also, a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Sunday Katung, has warned that the people of southern Kaduna might resort to self defence should the Federal Government fail to act decisively over the persistent killings by suspected herders in the area.
Katung, who is the representative of the Zango-Kataf/Jaba federal constituency, was reacting to the attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Godogodo town in the Jema’ah Local Government Area of Kaduna State on Saturday and Sunday.
The attacks left at least 20 persons dead and by Monday, the death toll had risen to 40.
The development forced the interim Chairman, Jema’ah Local Government Council, Humble Katuka, to impose a 24-hour curfew on the LGA.
Katung, on Tuesday, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a total war on rampaging Fulani herdsmen over the continued onslaught against the people Godogodo.
Katung called on President Buhari to invoke the constitutional provision in section 14(2) (b) of the nation’s constitution, which states that “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.”
The lawmaker also called on the Federal Government to establish a military formation in Jema’a Local Government with the aim of stopping the invasion of terrorists into “our helpless communities.”
