Shooting near Zurich mosque injures 3, suspect at large

A shooting at a mosque in Zurich has injured three people, two of them seriously. The suspect, a man around 30 years in age, is still at large.


About a dozen worshippers were inside the prayer hall at the time of the shooting on Monday evening, according to Swiss news agency ATS. A prayer service was scheduled fir 4:45 pm and the shooting took place at about 5:30 pm local time. The injured were taken to a local hospital after the shooting.

There were conflicting reports over whether the shooting took place in a prayer hall or in the intersection outside, but local media and a Zurich police official said the shooting took place outside near the intersection of Militärstrasse and Eisgasse.

Suspect still at large

Police sealed off the area and were looking for the suspect who is still at large. According to a statement from the Zurich police, the suspect is about 30 years old, was wearing dark clothes and a dark, woolen cap. After the shooting the suspect ran in the direction of the central train station.

"The city and cantonal police immediately launched a major search for the unknown perpetrator," read the statement.

A body was found under a nearby bridge, but police would not comment if it was linked to the shooting while investigations were underway.

The mosque is frequented largely by immigrants from North Africa, Eritrea and Somalia.
